Zanzibar Safari Club – “This is the first place I have known in Africa”

Wherever in the world you come from, this is the gate that greets you. Its name is MARHABA – Welcome. The moment you step in, it opens up to embrace you and introduce you to a wonderful experience of an Arabian dream of luxury and exuberance. There is a different pace to life, here everything is laid back. Taking a leisurely walk along the endless unspoilt beach, you can watch the local fishermen land their early morning catch; and you will hear the Kiswahili phrase which originates from here: “Hakuna Matata” – No problem’. “There are heavens and some have been so for centuries”, wrote David Livingstone of Zanzibar in 1866. “This is the first place I have known in Africa to rest before starting my final journey. An elusive place, where nothing is as it seems. I am in paradise”. Visit our online booking :

Top Travel Destinations – Zanzibar (Tanzania)

Once the trading centre for the whole of East Africa, Zanzibar is part of a coral reef stretching down Africa’s Indian Ocean coast. As early as the 10th century, Persian merchants migrated here. Portuguese influence secured a foothold with Vasco da Gama’s visit in 1499. Later came the Germans and the British. Over the centuries it shipped out fortunes in ivory, rhinoceros horn, gold, copper and spices. But to its infamy, it also provided the market for the great slave route which ran from Ujiji on Lake Tanganyika.
Today Zanzibar and nearby Pemba island, grow 75 percent of the world’s cloves. It is a beautiful island, relatively unspoilt by tourism and offers the combination of isolated beach resorts with the mystery and romance of historical Stone Town. Here the narrow streets are lined with Arab architecture and the main attractions include the Museum, the Arab Fort, the Anglican Cathedral built on the site of the old slave market, the Sultan’s Palace the clove market and the Indian Bazaar.
From the heady fragrance of the spice groves to the restful sight of a dhow’s triangular sails billowing in the wind, the charms of Zanzibar make it one of Africa’s most fascinating islands.
Serene Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge (Kenya)
Although I expected it, I was still taken aback by the breathtaking serenity at the Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge. The environment is completely natural, to the extent that there is no loud music or satellite televisions to disrupt the peace and quiet unless you bring it yourself. From the rooms one can enjoy a spectacular view of the park. Guests speak in low tones as they watch elephants, zebras and hippos quench their thirst at a water point about 80 metres away. The panoramic views of Taita-Taveta hills, particularly at sunrise and sunset, are amazing. Not surprisingly, Kenya’s elite enjoy dining and wining at the Kilaguni restaurant when they visit Tsavo West National Park.
Gigantic carvings
At vantage positions, gigantic carvings of a herd of elephants, which almost look real, are displayed. Art enthusiasts can enjoy attractive portraits of different personalities including that of Kenya’s founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. All the 51 standard rooms and five suites have private balconies that provide tranquil game viewing. Apart from the main dining room, there is an open-air area with timbered decks and a rock-hewn poolside bar from where guests can wine and dine. Guests can also enjoy a dip in the rock-paved swimming pool surrounded by lush foliage. In the restaurant, sun-gold, sky-blue and bush green savannah colour palettes blend with traditional khaki and canvas to give an African aura.
Rock-paved swimming pool
Breakfasts include freshly squeezed juices, yoghurt, cornflakes, millet porridge, boiled eggs, toasted bread and thick tea, ahead of daylong game drives. Michael Mwami, the lodge’s assistant manager, says hospitality is their speciality as their objective is to satisfy the culinary delights of their clients. “We strive to ensure guests enjoy their stay here before and after game drives across the expansive Tsavo West National Park,” he says. The restaurant was recently renovated to accommodate 130 guests. Previously, it used to sit less than 100. Dinner has special theme menus different on each day of the week.
